ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Local students participated at the Future Problem Solving international competition June 7-10 in La Crosse, Wis., and placed among the best in the world.

Adelle Jenkins, daughter of Rachelle and Nathan Jenkins of Wellman, placed second internationally competing in the Global Issues Problem Solving individual competition, junior division.

The senior division team of Ben Berhow (Jodi and Mark), Caleb Ferreira (Cheryl and Colin), Nate Lamansky (Anne and Dan) and Lexi Tu (Shelia and Jeremy) earned second place for its Presentation of Action Plan.

The presentation creatively demonstrated how the team’s best solution would be implemented. Grace Greer (Maureen and Dana), who placed fourth in the Global Issues Problem Solving senior division, joined the team for the Presentation of Action Plan competition.

The topic of the competition was criminal justice systems, and students were presented a futuristic scenario where law enforcement planned to rely heavily on surveillance technology despite objections from the community. Approximately 1,600 students from the U.S. and 10 other countries participated.

The Iowa home-schooled students also participated in the annual FPS Variety Show with students from Indiana, Illinois, Arizona and Florida. Paula Lawson-Moore coaches the FPS teams and individuals.
