ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Mid-Prairie placed second at their regional golf meet on Monday in Wapello, cementing their spot in the next round of play.

The Golden Hawks will move on to Oskaloosa to take on Williamsburg, PCM and Van Meter with the top two advancing to the state tournament on May 29-30.

They got there with a team score of 385, which was four strokes behind Williamsburg. Paige Slabaugh was the top golfer on the day, taking home meet medalist honors with an 82.

“Paige, once again, played an outstanding round of golf,” Mid-Prairie coach Tracy McArtor said. “Her two-over front nine was five shots better than anyone else in the field and came in with a nice 42 in which her only real blemish was a triple bogey on the 12th hole.”

The Golden Hawks team score also included Emma Mattes at 99 strokes and Abbi Patterson and Georgia Nisly both shooting 102. Abby Statler shot 107 and Kendra Schaefer a 110.

McArtor said moving on was obviously the goal, but now for next week they’ll need to improve on the little things.

“As good as the kids played yesterday, they left a lot of shots on the course,” McArtor said. “We’ll need to clean up some of those things in their game as we prepare for next week.”

The Golden Hawks have played Williamsburg twice this year, and after 36 holes against each other, only four strokes separate their scores. They haven’t played against their other opponents Van Meter or PCM.

“If they continue to play their game and do what they have been doing, they’ll be fine. We’re looking forward to the next step and excited to move on from there.”

Mid-Prairie (385) — Paige Slabaugh 82, Emma Mattes 99, Abbi Patterson 102, Georgia Nisly 102, Abigail Statler 107, Kendra Schaefer 110.
