A Washington County Extension Baby-sitting Basics training course started with a spark on June 11 and continued until June 15. The goal of Baby-sitting Basics is to help youth become responsible baby sitters.

Special guest Washington firefighter Joey Wallace shared his expertise and discussed fire safety and gave each youth the opportunity to use a fire extinguisher.

Class coordinator Madison Sheetz discussed potential hazards in a home. Amy Greiner from Kids Corral showed participants how to conduct safety procedures and the business side of baby-sitting.

Other topics in this week’s agenda included infant care, which was led by Michaela Berg with her son Boyd, and what the steps are that involve for providing care for infants.

Linsey Steen and two daughters came to speak about toddler care. Both guest speakers talked about ages and stages of young children, safety, age appropriate toys and activities, and physical, mental, social and emotional aspects of child development.

Thirteen students completed and graduated from Babysitting Basics Friday, June 15. The five-day course was sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach-Washington County. This course is offered each year for youth who have completed fifth grade.

A second course is being offered July 30 - Aug. 3. Contact the Washington County Extension office for more information at 319-653-4811.
