ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Martha Louise Norenberg, a long-time resident of Adel, Iowa, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at the Brewster Village Retirement Home in Appleton, Wisc. She celebrated her 85th birthday on Oct. 23.

Martha’s memorial service will take place at the Methodist Church in Adel, Iowa, on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, at 11 a.m. Friends and family are welcome to attend the memorial service. A reception will follow the memorial service at the Methodist Church.

Martha Louise Norenberg was the youngest of three children, born in Kalona, Iowa, on Oct. 23, 1933. Her parents, Amy and Emil Hesselschwerdt, also had a son, Donald, and a daughter, Treva Marie.

After graduating from Kalona High School, Martha attended Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. At Mount Pleasant, she was a cheerleader and an active member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She graduated with a degree in elementary education in 1956.

In 1956, Martha moved to Adel, Iowa, and spent the next 40 years as a public school teacher. She taught sixth grade, second grade, and kindergarten for 21 years.

Martha was a member of TTT, a nonprofit, philanthropic organization of women, and Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional society for women educators. She served as president for the VMW and was a member of the Methodist Church for more than 60 years. In earlier years, she was an avid bridge player, golfer and bowler. Martha lived in Adel for 58 years before moving to Appleton, Wisc. in 2014, to be closer to her daughter Laura Beth.

Her sons survive her: Dan (Uta) of Munich, Germany, Jon (Miriam) of Modesto, Calif.; and her daughter: Laura Beth August (Alan) of Greenville, Wisc. She was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren: Nicholas, Gabriel, Caleb, Tommy, Annie, Amy, Noah and Lea. She is also survived by her sister: Treva Marie Rice of Houston, Texas.

Martha’s wish was that friends and family come together and celebrate the fellowship of one another at the Dec. 15 memorial service. Purple was Martha’s favorite color so feel free to come “decked out” in your favorite shade of purple. She requested no flowers, instead she said memorial contributions would be gratefully accepted for the ADM Scholarship Foundation, 801 Nile Kinnick Drive South, Adel, IA 50003, on her behalf.
