With longtime Kalona City Clerk Karen Christner retiring in February 2019, the City Council, Monday, named Deputy City Clerk Sarah Etheredge as her successor.

The council approved Etheredge’s promotion with a salary of $45,760 plus benefits.

“We posted the job internally, and our recommendation is to offer the position to her,” City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said.

Christner announced her plans to retire in February at the Oct. 1 council meeting.

At the same time, the council changed the city ordinance pertaining to the city clerk position.

The position will no longer be an appointed position renewable every two years.

“Cities are getting away from having to reappoint positions every two years,” Schlabaugh said after Monday’s meeting. “This is something we’ve been meaning to do for a while.”

Etheredge will work with Christner over the next few months in order to help with the transition.

Schlabaugh said that the city has posted a job opening for a utility billing clerk.
