ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Aug. 26, Parkside Activities Center in Wellman will be a buzz of activity. The 4th annual fundraiser for Feed the Kids happens that evening beginning with music at 4 PM followed by a silent auction and dinner with a live auction to follow dinner. No tickets will be sold at the door this year.

With 1 in 4 children in our community being food insecure (meaning they are unable to access enough food on a daily basis and may not know where their next meal is coming from), the Feed the Kids organization has teamed up with the Council of Mid-Prairie Churches to be of assistance to these children.

A backpack program during the school year provides weekly food bags for these children, costing approximately $228 per year per student served. Currently, there are about 50 students being served in the Mid-Prairie school district elementary schools. This translates to about $14,000.

Summer food bags were available at the Kalona and Wellman Public Libraries to assist these children during the summer months. In addition, a Wellman Free Lunch Program was available at the Goodwin Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Besides these programs, there are granola and cereal bars in the school health offices of all M-P schools for students who do not have access to breakfast. And food is provided for the school food pantries in each of the M-P schools.

Community support of this fundraiser has been truly amazing in the past three years and the board of Feed the Kids expects no less this year. Donations of items for the silent and live auctions will be taken until Aug. 24. They may be dropped off at Wellman Produce or a board member can pick them up if needed. Tickets for the fundraiser are almost gone, but monetary donations can be made to the Mid-Prairie Foundation and designated for Feed the Kids.
