There were no local election upsets with Supervisor Robert Yoder (R) of Kalona handily defeating independent candidate Stuart Yoder in the District 2 race, 1,528 to 383. The breakdown shows there were 700 ballots cast for Robert Yoder at the Kalona voting site and 383 in Riverside. For Stuart Yoder, the tally was 145 at Kalona and 96 in Riverside.

Supervisor Stan Stoops (R) also easily outpaced his opponent, Kimberly Davis (D), 1,290 to 677 in the District 4 race.

District 3 incumbent Supervisor Jack Seward Jr. (R) of Wellman was unopposed, and tallied 1,817 votes. Also unopposed were County Auditor Dan Widmer (R) and Washington County Deputy Sheriff Jared Schneider (R) for Washington County Sheriff.

Iowa Rep. Jared Klein of Keota (R) defeated his Libertarian challenger, Joshua Miller of Washington, 10,116 to 2,785. In Washington County, Klein won 8,869 votes to 2,022.

In Iowa District 77, vacated when Rep. Sally Stutsman (D) of Riverside retired, North Liberty Mayor Amy Nielsen (D) defeated Royce Phillips (R) of Tiffin 10,193 to 7,445,

More than one-third of the 11,083 votes cast in Washington County 2016 General Election were absentee ballots.

According to Washington County Auditor Dan Widmer, 4,864 absentee ballots were cast in 2012 and in 2008, there were 3,484 of the ballots.

“In looking at the number,” said Widmer, “it shows that absentee ballots voting continued to be a viable option for nearly a third of the 15,171 registered voters in Washington County. I’m pleased by that fact that in round numbers, three out of four citizens exercised their right to vote. Of course, the goal is 100 percent.”
