IMS completed the first round of conference play on Friday with a 63-46 road victory over Mediapolis. Things started slowly for IMS, as it took to the 5:30 mark of the first quarter before a Reggie Borntrager basket off a Caleb Gingerich feed got IMS on the scoreboard. The Bulldogs edged ahead before IMS scored on the last three possessions of the quarter, with baskets by Borntrager around a Cameron Roser-Peet trey to lead 17-15 after one period.

IMS then outscored the Bulldogs 17-9 in the second period to lead 34-24 at intermission. The third quarter was more evenly played before IMS pulled away to lead 58-37 with just under five minutes remaining.

IMS was paced on the evening by seniors Cole Ours and Mitchell Schmieder with 15 points apiece, while classmate Borntrager finished with 14. Schmieder also recorded nine rebounds, five blocks, four assists and three steals, Borntrager added six rebounds and three steals, and Ours had three assists and three rebounds.

Gingerich, a junior, finished with a team-high six assists to go with five points, four rebounds and two steals, while classmate Trevor Leyden also pulled down four rebounds and had two assists. Freshman Eli Ours bounced back from an ankle injury to score six points with three assists. Roser-Peet, a senior, and junior Blake Bontrager finished with three points apiece and junior Jeremy Niemeyer completed the scoring with two points.

“Mediapolis is never an easy place for us, and a road win is always good,” coach Dwight Gingerich said. “We were able to get into a good tempo and find a flow in the second quarter, and then keep it going in the second half. Each of our guys came in and gave us something, which we really needed.”

IMS is now 8-1 overall, 7-1 in conference play, and goes to Lone Tree on Tuesday.
