Iowa City -

Students drinking expressos while working on laptops along with community members getting brunch all tied together with the intoxicating aroma of fresh-baked cinnamon rolls. That is what makes up the morning atmosphere of the new Encounter Café in Iowa City.

The café, owned by Sharon Bethel Church, opened Aug. 23, Manager Ray Yutzy said.

“We had kind of a ‘soft opening,’ but business has been very good so far,” Yutzy said. “We’re plenty busy, but the staff is working hard and adapting well.”

Employees, along with Yutzy, are all members of Sharon Bethel Church. Profits from the café will be funneled through the church to local charities and other missions, he said.

“We have a committee of six men making the determination on where the money will go,” he said. “We like being in Iowa City, they’ve made us feel very welcome, so we’d like to give some back locally.”

The primary focus of the café, besides serving food and drinks, is to make connections with customers.

“I think all of us working here have felt a call to serve from God,” Yutzy said. “We want to develop friendships and relationships with customers and just have a nice comfortable place where people, especially students, can come and relax.”

The café, located on the corner of Clinton and Court streets in Iowa City, is warm and inviting. The lighting is relaxing, but substantial enough to read or do homework.
