ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

A group of Riverside parents are working to organize a soccer league in the city.

The goal is to have kids playing next spring. Parent Jennifer Mize attended the Nov. 19 City Council meeting where she answered questions about the group’s request for $3,200 in funding from the city. The money would be used for equipment.

Mize said the group is working to set up a nonprofit organization to run the soccer league. Her group is discovering there are many hoops to jump through in setting up a nonprofit.

“It has been a struggle,” she said, noting there is a $275 application fee plus another $250 for a financial services firm to complete the paperwork.

There were some questions from the council that Mize could not answer – how much insurance costs would be and how many children are expected.

Mayor Allen Schneider said he wants to see the group get its nonprofit status approved before the council approves funds.

Councilperson Bob Schneider said he hopes this proposal would move forward because it generates great participation – from both players and spectators.

“It gets a pretty good size crowd going,” he said.
