ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The favorable weather Saturday, Aug. 19, helped push the total number of riders to a record number of 525 cyclists for the annual Courage Ride, up 85 riders from last year. Nearly 600 people attended the event, including non-riders and volunteers.

One-hundred people took advantage of the free skin cancer screenings conducted by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics dermatologists. The silent auction items were also up this year with more than 60 items donated for the event.

The unofficial fundraising to-date is over $83,000. Courage Ride will make a check presentation to the Holden Cancer Center Sarcoma Research Program later this fall.

A special presentation was also made to an 11-year osteosarcoma patient, Devin Martz. Courage Ride board member and University of Iowa bio-medical student Conor Bryant developed a special prosthetic for Martz that allows him to ride a bike again after having part of his leg amputated and having a special procedure called rotationplasty performed. Courage Ride presented new bikes to Devin and his brother. The bikes were donated by World of Bikes and Geoff’s Bike & Ski.
