Joseph Michael Peccia, 67, of Avon Park, Fla., formerly of Washington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, at Sommers Hospice House in Sebring, Fla., following a short illness.

A private interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Washington at a later date. A general memorial has been established. Online condolences may be sent for Joe’s family through the web at

Joe was born Dec. 4, 1949, in Bozman, Mont., the son of Irvin Joseph and Ella Elizabeth (Helmin) Peccia. He graduated from Three Forks High School in 1968 and attended Western College of Auctioneering School in Billings, Mont. in 1971. Joe graduated from Detroit Lakes Minnesota Area Vocational Technical Institute in 1982 and from Wodiva Minnesota Area Vocational Technical Institute in 1983.

Joe was born with a club foot on his right leg and in 1950 he was stricken with polio, also in his right leg. From 1950 to 1964, Joe made many trips to Shriners Hospital in the Twin Cities and underwent many major surgeries on his right leg. He wore mismatched shoes up until 2012.

Joe has resided in Montana, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida. In 1981, he became a Shriner at Fargo, N.D. He was a current member of Osman Shrine Temple in St. Paul, Minn. Joe received some special awards for his participation in many Shriner events including circuses, Salute to America and driving golf carts during state fairs in Des Moines, Iowa.

In 2010, Joe moved to Avon Park, Fla., to enjoy the warm weather. He remained active as a Shriner, making many trips to Shriners Hospitals in Tampa with children in need of medical care and special runs to Shriners Hospital with aluminum tabs. He collected over 70,000 aluminum tabs for the Shriners Hospital. He will surely be missed by the Shriners.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
