Christmas may be coming but Wellman residents still have through the first week of January to help students at Mid-Prairie West Elementary.

The Wellman Cooperative Telephone Association is accepting donations of gloves, mittens, and hats to be hung on a tree in their office, all of which will be put on display until they are taken to the local elementary. The drive usually collects more than 100 items on an annual basis, but the coffers are again dry at the school, with just a few miscellaneous items left over from the year before.

Everything collected in the drive will be kept in the Wellman community and sent up the road to Mid-Prairie West.

Donations of all kinds are accepted Lisa Miller-Allen of the co-op said. For years, one beneficiary has also taken the time to handknit hats and other winter gear for local children.

The tree is set up every year after Thanksgiving and has been a good example of community giving. The Wellman cooperative has hosted the tree for years in the community, Miller-Allen said, since she joined the company 14 years ago.

But, this is the first year the company is both hosting the tree and in charge of the entire collection operation.

The items dotting the tree are the result of people who bring in items out of reflex. Miller-Allen said many people aren’t aware the company has taken over the entire process.

“It’s become sort of a habit, which is a good thing,” she said. “It’s a good reminder for people that we still have a need.”
